Back to Melissa’s Studio How to Break Your Dependence on Reality So many students have told me they want to take their still life paintings to the next level; to take more of a role in composition than simply recording what’s before them. In response, I’ve collected some shapes from the center of my dining table, broken them down, and reassembled them in interesting ways. You may do this with things around you right now. Just pick interesting shapes, knowing you’re free to alter sizes, colors, textures, anything you want. Then overlap and place them in various ways in small sketches until you find one you like. Then transfer to a larger, better surface, pick a limited color scheme and go for it! You can do this! Here are the separated items I chose: Here are some sketches of possible ways to combine the elements. Note Art Cat’s design contribution in the corner. And here are some class demonstrations for the assignment, one in watercolor and one in acrylic. |
